Countdown to iPad – Sheet Music II (Use Case 14)

Sunday 28 February 2010 - Filed under gaps + mobile + Technology

In Countdown to iPad – Sheet Music (Use Case 2) we introduced iPad as an effective way to manage sheet music. Once sheet music is in the iPad, there is so much more you can do with it. Add a wireless mic/acoustic pickup and the right software and you have an iPad that can listen to you play. As some of our readers imagined, this would make it possible for the iPad to know when to automatically turn the page. Moreover, adding Rockband-like-qualities to the sheet music software turns your iPad into a music teacher/trainer.

So, taking the process a little further, with the same mic setup and the right software you could have your iPad listen to you play your original music and compose the sheet music for you. Don’t know if the software exists but I am sure some enterprising developer could make it happen.

There are already products in the music arena which feature LCDs for displaying and cueing sheet music – such as the Freehand MusicPad Pro and the MusicPad. These however are one-off specific devices for the sole purpose of displaying sheet music. The iPad would be ideal!!

Also, think of the learning ability here. It listens and displays the note I’m hitting versus the note I’m supposed to hit, giving me great feedback to help get my fingers trained to hit the right keys for the notes I see on the page as well as my ears being in coordination with that. I get the right note and move to the next. You can have a similar thing for getting timing right.
