Countdown to iPad – Back to School (Use Case 9)

Tuesday 23 February 2010 - Filed under gaps + mobile + Technology

The first phase of a digital textbook initiative backed by Governor Schwarzenegger provided some California High School classes access to digital textbooks in the fall of 2009. “This first-in-the-nation initiative will reduce education costs … and help ensure every California student has access to a world-class education,” stated Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The long term cost savings could be huge. According to a fact sheet published by the office of the governor, “The average textbook costs about $75 to $100 per student. For a school district with about 10,000 high school students, the use of free digital textbooks in just science and math classes could save up to $2 million dollars.”

I’m with The Tome Terminator on this one. With digital learning tools like the iPad, we can save money while providing a “world-class education.” On a ‘lighter’ note, pun intended, while we are saving money we might be able to save our children’s backs/posture too. Have you carried a stack of textbooks lately? Meet my daughter Kianna, 105 pounds… 125 pounds with book bag. No wonder kids ‘forget’ to bring their textbooks home from school.

So let’s join with Arnold I’ll be Back to School Schwarzenegger and SkyNet, eh, I mean Apple, and embrace the future of education.

Apple iPad - where textbooks become multi-media learning centers.

We have many iPad use case scenarios queued up, but could always use more. Please comment and share your iPad ideas below.

Great idea, but I’m not going to hold my breath that my home state will actually make it happen.

This is the state that can’t even get a budget passed on time and currently has a $21 Billion deficit with no clue how to fix it.

My lovely spouse just got off of a weeklong mandatory furlough because the school district she works for could not afford to pay for the entire school year. That was on top of a four percent pay cut this year.

At least she still has her job though, there are a lot of folks who don’t.
